Robin Hellier: Our EVP expert
Haunted Apparitions
Would like to introduce our EVP expert....Robin Hellier
`Hello and welcome to the EVP section... EVP stands for the 'Electronic Voice Phenomenon' in which mysterious sounds and voices appear on digital or analogue audio recordings. They may be relatively low signals, and therefore quite difficult to differentiate from the 'random electronic noise' inherent in all recording systems.
My name is Robin Hellier. I was an electronics engineer for some years, working in medical electronics development, and also on artificial intelligence and logic controlled cybernetic systems research. I've always enjoyed tinkering with electronics, and wired up the parental home for sound when I was eight - a typical nosy kid!
I've always had a passion for sound, and also play guitar in a soft rock and blues duo called Deja2. I decided to experiment with EVP two years ago, and made a short initial recording on an MP3 player which had a voice recording function using a built-in microphone.
I was skeptical, and didn't expect to hear anything unusual, and the resulting recording sounded quiet enough. However, I thought I heard a faint sound near the end of the recording, so I loaded it into an editing program on my computer. I amplified the recording, filtered out some of the hiss, and was astonished to hear the sound of a male voice shouting "Hey!" I made the recording at 3:15am, and my house was deathly quiet at the time.

Please bear in mind that I also had to amplify 'background noise' considerably to hear anything, so you may not distinguish the EVP well at first. It helps if you play EVPs back on a continuous loop.
I've since developed much more sensitive equipment which I call the HEMIC. The Hellier Electro-Magnetic Inductive Coupling system. Inherent system hiss is still somewhat of a problem, but I have received short sentences and occasionally achieve short two way communication!
Here's a couple of recordings I've made using my system.
Thank you Robin ~ http://www.box.net/shared/fp1hqxrnvg

A taxi driver told a friend that he used to lodge in our big old house but would never return as he believed it to be haunted by a 'malevolent' little girl.... I have never been made aware of such an entity, but decided to try and contact her late at night. I recorded the following....
Daddy ~ http://www.box.net/shared/ylhxp5gb She doesn't sound malevolent!
I will be conducting a live trial of the HEMIC during the investigation at Lympne Castle in Kent in April. I will also be asking all those present to participate in the experiment!
The Lympne Castle EVP Experiment.
I will be transmitting output via an FM sender unit. Investigators will be able to hear the signal in near real time (slight delay for processing reasons) by using a portable FM radio. My only stipulation is that ear buds are used, otherwise feedback will be a problem.
By joining in the loop, investigators may well add power to the system, which could be interesting. Stay at lowish volume levels, mind your ears!
I will be asking investigators at Lympne to try to get more EVPs by bringing along a radio/ cassette recorder. I will also require some of the team outside the system to simply record and listen with their ears to form a test control, and highlight any sounds caused by normal acoustic means.
`As an experiment, I believe it will be a world first, so be there or be square! `
Do you have an EVP recording you would like to share?
Email us through the contact page with your link and we will forward it to Robin to comment on!
